Art based activities: The Kiss by KLimt

Responding to art can be very stimulating in lessons leading to a great variety of activities by simply describing a painting to more complex ones. Art can encourage students to become more involved using their language skills in the real world overcoming their fear of making mistakes. Teachers should take advantage of the potential which art has to develop students' creative and critical thinking skills as they can discuss how art depicts different aspect of their lives and urge them reflect on feelings, thoughts, problems depicted in paintings. You can ask students collect information about these paintings and present it in class. Another group of students can write about the possible feelings and thoughts of the characters painted, their possible life journey and even create a fictional story in which these characters are starring. There is a wide variety of activities which can be incoroporated in lessons! Sky is the limit! This time the activity has to do with one of my favorite paintings....

Klimt

Using postcards of famous paintings can bring students closer to art as they can touch them and observe the details. A nice idea would be to buy an embossed postacard as I did with Klimt's Kiss painting, which I bought from Belvedere Museum in Austria,  that will excite students even more.

This specific postcard shows one of the most highly regarded paintings by Klimt, The Kiss.
1) Apart from gathering information about the cultural background and history of this painting, the life of Klimt and the cultural movements he got inspired by, students can create a story based on this scene painted.

They should take into consideration questions like:
-Who are these people?
-Why are they in such a pose?
-Are they hugging or are they in a hostile pose?
-What happened before this scene was painted?
-What happened after this painting was completed?

2) After they have written a short story or even a biography of these characters, they can write questions that they would like to ask the artist or ask questions to the characters portrayed on this painting.if they could have the chance. Next, they can role play the interview in pairs, followed by writing up a news article about the interview using reported speech.

3) Moreover, students can compare and contrast two paintings by Klimt that appear to have the same motif, the Hug and the Kiss. They should unfold the story behind these two paintings, tell the differences between them regarding both the way they are painted but also the meaning conveyed and tell with which painting they can relate to more.
